New York mayor defends unions

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg defended public sector unions on Friday, saying they helped him manage the city, but stopped short of advocating the preservation of collective bargaining rights for protesting workers in Wisconsin.

“Unions help in training and in management and in allocating resources. … It would be very hard to manage a city of this size without unions,” Bloomberg said on his weekly radio show. “I’ve always thought that people have a right to organize.”
