The revival of an investigation into tabloid tactics at a London newspaper has turned into a new skirmish in a battle 3,000 miles away between rival New York broadsheets.

A lengthy New York Times report about allegations of phone hacking at the News of the World, a Sunday tabloid owned by News Corp, provoked a protest from Rupert Murdoch’s media group that the story had been “tainted by a vested interest in its outcome”.
